Soul Brother is a unique record store specialising in soul, jazz and funk – based in London but with a truly global client base.
Their previous website was around ten years old, and with over 20,000 products their site was huge, but had become difficult to manage and lacked many of the features that store owners have come to expect from modern e-commerce.
We wrangled the product data into a structure suitable for scalable ecommerce. The site was built using Woocommerce, and developed a few customisations to enable a site of this size to stay speedy even with such a large product base. We integrating a customised music player and custom post types to show off new releases.
Soul Brother's Google search ranking is excellent – number three for 'Soul CDs' (only topped by Amazon and HMV) – so we needed to make sure we carried this across to the new site. We did so using on-site search engine optimisation, and by smart use of redirects and SEO tools.
By studying the previous site's analytics we could see that nearly 10% of site visitors were using mobile devices. Previously they were getting a bad experience – a large page layout squeezed down into a tiny screen. So we decided to create a responsive site – the layout adapts to smaller screens, providing an optimal experience no matter which screen size is being used.
Since launching, feedback from customers has been positive and – most importantly – sales are up too.
*p.s. for some time the Soul Brother site was the largest WooCommerce site in the world! See below:
